T-Shirts Tell of Transformations

Clothesline Project shirt
This month, the YWCA SGV joins hundreds of other organizations across the nation in commemorating Domestic Violence Awareness Month. One of the most visible events locally will be The Clothesline Project, a public showcase of t-shirts decorated by victims and survivors of domestic violence.

At venues such as Cal Poly Pomona and other educational institutions, the project provides an opportunity for the public to hear the voices of women as they break the silence and Clothesline Project shirts by survivorsbear witness to their personal experiences of violence.

"The t-shirts are also a testament to their transformation from victim to survivor in a powerful statement of solidarity," says Ana Interiano, YWCA SGV WINGS coordinator of outreach. "The showcases are part of our outreach to young women.”

Like the famous AIDS quilt, The Clothesline Project puts a human face on the statistics of violence against women. The colors of the shirts represent how domestic violence has affected a woman's life. For example, the white shirts are decorated by relatives and friends of women who died as a result of domestic abuse.

For information about the project or how to raise awareness of domestic violence in your organization or community, contact Ana Interiano, (626) 214-9451.

Needs Increase for Domestic Violence Victims

At a time when help for victims of domestic violence is needed more than ever, state budget cuts have forced the closing of some domestic violence shelters and put more strain on those that are struggling to remain open.
