A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO
As we stand together in the face of recent raids and unlawful immigration enforcement activities that have shaken our communities, our agency calls upon our elected officials to unite with the people of this country, our neighbors, and immigrant families in solidarity. We’ve witnessed similar injustices in our own backyard (San Gabriel Valley) over the past year, and it’s time for immediate action and change… Enough is Enough. It’s imperative that our taxpayer dollars are not used to perpetuate practices that disregard the fundamental right to due process. We urge our federal policymakers to temporarily halt funding for immigration enforcement and instead chart a new course grounded in compassion, constitutional rights, and humanity.
Recent weeks have brought forth disturbing accounts of U.S. citizens being targeted and harassed by immigration officers, including the tragic killing of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse from Minnesota. In addition to Pretti’s death, other individuals have died in encounters with immigration enforcement and while in ICE custody, including Renee Good, Keith Porter Jr., Luis Gustavo Núñez Cáceres, Geraldo Lunas Campos, Víctor Manuel Díaz, Parady La, Luis Beltrán Yáñez–Cruz, Heber Sánchez Domínguez, and the countless families who have been harmed due to their escalating practices. These deaths and harmful practices highlight the urgent need for accountability, action, and respect for human life.
Despite the resilience of Minnesotans and others in the face of these challenges, our current administration’s response has been dismissive. Yet, as citizens, as taxpayers, we have the powerful right to speak out, peacefully assemble, and raise our voices against injustice. In this moment, transcending party lines, we must come together to recognize the human stories behind the headlines and prioritize the safety and dignity of all community members. At YWCA San Gabriel Valley, we acknowledge our role in calling out injustice and advocating for a brighter future. Together, let’s forge a path forward guided by empathy, humanity, and the unwavering pursuit of a better tomorrow for every individual.
Sincerely,
